Wheat News - January 2009

At a time when trading activity is traditionally low, the market has been driven on to higher levels of activity, which have not been seen since September of last year.

Outside markets, especially currency are contributing factors to the change of market direction. The weakening of Sterling against both the Euro and US dollar is allowing UK and EU wheat to become more competitive for export and thus supporting values. Meanwhile, talk of cold weather in the Northern Hemisphere and dry weather in Argentina are generating concern over planted grain conditions and adding further momentum to the upward market movement.

A continuation of the weaker markets seen during the first half of the season would appear for the time being to have disappeared. The market has created for itself a degree of uncertainty as to whether this rise is sustainable, but fuelled by domestic demand in the UK, there now appears to be a consensus that the ‘lows’ for the season have come and gone.

The harvest delay continues to impact on the price of spot wheat with a lack of merchantable grain in the system. The UK crop size is estimated at 17mmt, a potential record, and this is mirrored throughout the world with high yielding crops being reported. On the 30th September the USDA projected a record world wheat production of 676.3mmt, and with Australia being optimistic on achieving a 22mmt crop confidence is high on achieving the USDA estimate.

However, whilst yields have been higher there has been a reduction in the volume of quality milling wheat and these grades have not dropped in price as quickly with premiums widening.

With the financial turmoil around the globe the wheat market should be treated with caution. Outside markets will continue to influence future price direction and we need to see how various financial rescue packages in the banking sector work out and their subsequent interpretation by the market.

Industry News - October 2008

  • A top retailer and bread manufacturer have announced they are to produce loaves which are 300g, 600g and 1000g breaking the tradition, and the previous law, which required bread to be sold, in practical terms, in only 400g and 800g. The most up to date legislative position is that the EU Directive making the change, which was for pre-packed products i.e. wrapped bread, will be implemented in the UK on 11th April 2009. Consultation to permit the same changes to be made to unwrapped bread will be issued shortly. The intention is the relaxation for unwrapped products would also take place in April 2009. However LACORS have confirmed they will not seek to prosecute any breaches of the legislation as they are aware the law is about to change.

  • Asian wheat stocks are expected to increase this year as stronger harvests are recorded in Australia, China and India. Australia is expected to regain its role as one of the world’s top wheat exporters, with the USA the biggest exporter followed by Canada and Australia.

  • Ireland, the best performing euro zone economy since the birth of the single currency, became on Thursday the first in the 15 country region to fall into recession.

  • The Agriculture and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB), which incorporates HGCA and other levy boards, has launched a consultation to determine industry views on the scope, use and financing of quality schemes and branding on AHDB sector products. More information is available at www.ahdb.org.uk/publications/consultation.aspx

  • Plans have been announced for a merger between Centaur Grain and Grain farmers to create a new national grain supplier.

  • World Heart Day was on 28th September and was used to highlight the benefits of a fibre rich diet. Recommendations include eating wholemeal, multigrain or multi-seed bread.

Energy News - August 2008

Steeply rising energy prices combined with other rising costs are having a serious impact on the milling and baking costs. The price of oil has risen to a record level beyond $140 per barrel, which is already 25% beyond its 1979/80 peak in inflation adjusted terms and some commentators predict it will rise further. Although inflation has been rising throughout 2008, much of this cost increase has occurred over the last twelve months and is still to be reflected in the market. Many businesses in the freight sector have adopted a fuel surcharge response – as with airlines - as diesel costs soar. Electricity costs have risen in line with oil and now stand over 80% higher year on year, and most power suppliers are predicting worse to come. According to the International Grains Council, the cost of shipping a tonne of wheat across the Atlantic is well over $100 per tonne despite the
economic slow down.

Wheat/Agriculture News - August 2008

Grain prices remain firm, although there is a record global wheat harvest in prospect. Much will depend on the quality of the crop, especially in Europe and the UK. Conditions have been reasonably good, although there have been some worries about disease levels in the UK and drought in Denmark and the Baltic region. However, quality will be finally determined over the next six to eight weeks. In the meantime farmers are reluctant to commit themselves by selling their bread wheat before the harvest.

August 2008: Did you know ... where the term “pumpernickel” comes from?

Napoleon gave common bread its name when he demanded a loaf of dark rye bread for his horse during the Prussian campaign. "Pain pour Nicole," he ordered, which meant "Bread for Nicole," his horse. To Germanic ears, the request sounded like "pumpernickel," which is the term we use today for this traditional loaf.

ADM New Fleet Investment

ADM Milling Ltd, the UK’s largest independent flour miller, has announced a major investment in new delivery vehicles to be added to their fleet. The investment totals 36 vehicles, and includes curtain sided trailers and 15 tanker/trailers, all of which have been painted in bright white and stylishly emblazoned with the ADM livery.

Safety & Health has been a large factor in the fitment of the bulk tankers, as all have now been equipped with pneumatic staircases and hand-rails. The hand rails are situated on all four sides of the top of the tanker and the staircase ensures ascending and descending is much safer than using a conventional ladder. The operating system for these additions is located in an enclosed box, and can only be operated when the vehicle is both stationery and the engine is disengaged. Similarly the vehicle will not operate when either of the safety features are being used.

In addition the new and refurbished tankers now boast the advantage of being totally self contained with independent motors, thus doing away with the need for additional equipment on tractors.

This equipment has been designed, built and fitted specifically to ADM’s requirements by specialist manufacturer Feldbinder, at their Lincolnshire site. Tractors have been supplied by DAF.

The new vehicles are significantly safer for the environment than the older equipment. With each vehicle equipped with lower emission engines, harmful toxins from fuel that are released into the atmosphere are greatly reduced.

This investment reinforces the company's commitment to providing an efficient and high quality national delivery service to meet customers needs.

ADM Milling Flour Price Increase

ADM Milling Ltd announced on the 3rd August a flour price increase of £28.75/tonne for all flours to become effective from Monday 11th September 2006.

Ian Pinner, Managing Director, described the increase as an essential reaction to the continued cost base increases for energy, fuel and wheat, he went on to say; “This is the third year that we have had to accept increased energy costs which are now 30% higher than in November 2005. In addition global wheat markets have moved up sharply in reaction to supply and demand figures showing world stocks to be the lowest for 25 years.” Describing the events that have led to this situation, Ian Pinner explained; “Weather conditions have had an adverse effect on crops, Ukraine and Russia both experienced severe crop destruction due to extreme and extensive periods of adverse weather and the droughts in North America, combined with lower acreage of plantings, have reduced their wheat crop. These global market factors, coupled with lower stocks and a forecast reduction of supply in the world’s key wheat producing areas, have pushed up UK wheat prices to a level 15% higher than in November 2005.”

Food allergy or Fashion fad?

Many of us believe we suffer from a food allergy, but do we actually have one? Recent studies show that although 20 per cent of the population think they have a food allergy, the reality is, less than 1.5 per cent actually suffers from any adverse reaction to food – and less than 1 per cent has an adverse reaction to wheat.

Food Allergy or Fashion Fad?

Bloating is often blamed on wheat – however this is actually unlikely to be caused by wheat. Most allergies or reactions are caused by eggs, nuts, milk, soy, citrus fruits and shell fish. In fact if you do feel bloated it is more likely to be due to your lifestyle than pinning it down onto a particular food! According to dieticians, the main causes of bloating are hormone fluctuations, irregular meal patterns, over-eating and stress-related indigestion.

Health professionals are concerned that many of today’s generation are following fashion fads, and self diagnosing as allergic to wheat. They are then totally cutting all wheat intakes out of their diets, missing out on an excellent source of protein, fibre and micronutrients. Professor Tom Sanders from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at King’s College London explains cutting wheat out of your diet unnecessarily can set you on the slippery slope towards an eating disorder. “The quality of a diet is all about what you include not what you cut out.” For further information refer to http://www.fabflour.co.uk/home.asp

UK WHEAT PRICES CONTINUE TO SOAR TO SIX YEAR HIGH

The UK flour milling industry is now seeing the increases in world commodity grain prices severely impacting on their cost base for the second time this autumn.

Ian Pinner, Managing Director, ADM Milling Ltd, stated on 12th November;

“UK wheat prices have risen to six year highs in the last few weeks. Prices of wheats for soft and biscuit flours have risen by over £45/tonne year on year. These huge increases, initially triggered by reduced European and UK wheat crops caused by the drought throughout Europe, have been compounded by increased export demand for UK wheat. The Black Sea harvest, which last year supplied a significant volume of wheat and capped wheat prices in Europe and elsewhere, has failed and therefore demand for wheat in drought stricken southern Europe is being supplied from northern Europe. The falling value of the pound sterling against the Euro is further fuelling this export demand. Two new factors are beginning to impact on wheat prices driving them even higher. China has become a major purchaser of soft commodities which is increasing wheat prices and global freight costs; secondly plantings of wheat in the UK this autumn have been spoiled due to the dry conditions leading to speculation of a shortage of supply into 2004/5 harvest year. All of this is leading to sustained cost increases.”

Food & Bake 2006 ''A great success''!

As the largest independent flour miller in the UK, ADM Milling’s presence at the recent Food & Bake exhibition was an essential decision, with a bright, contemporary and welcoming stand covering 100 square metres.

Held in Halls 6 & 7 of the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, the show attracted more than 16,250 trade visitors, 12% higher than the last Food & Bake in 2004. Full representation by all sectors of the UK bakery food manufacturing industry were present from small Craft Bakers to the largest UK Plant Bakers.

The exhibition enjoyed excellent media success being featured in several national newspapers and on national television and news. Birmingham designer Emma Green was commissioned by Food & Bake organisers Bakery Exhibitors Ltd to create a two metre high version of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa made entirely of toasted bread. This was subsequently sold on e-bay with the proceeds going to the Bakers Benevolent Charity.

ADM Milling operates in the very dynamic UK market where quality flour is crucial. With this in mind, we have invested in the very latest laboratory instrumentation and systems, giving accurate, reliable, quality control data, essential for meeting the highest product standards and consistency. For this reason we focused a section of our stand presentation on the benefits of this instrumentation and the technical support we provide.

Food & Bake was a launch platform for several new product lines including; Mata Ki Chakki Atta, SR Atta and Lotus Chinese Self Raising Flour all targeted towards the Speciality Wholesale Trade. Also launched was Victory Improver, a bread improver developed especially for the Craft Baker. ADM Bakers Mixes, a range of confectionery and bread premixes, concentrates and complementary toppings and fillings were promoted by food tastings during the show.

Food & Bake 2006 has been a great success for ADM Milling.

Summer Vitality System (VES)

VES?The summer version of the seven day eating plan continues to promote the importance of bread within the context of a healthy, balanced diet. It was developed by the nutritionist and food writer Fiona Hunter, who took part in a recent radio session with 17 regional stations. The key news hooks for the radio interviews were the results from a short poll commissioned around the controversial size zero (a British size 4) debate. The poll’s top line results were as follows:

60% regard size zero as damaging to a woman’s health and well-being.
An indication of women’s conflicting views on body image is reflected in the finding that more men (37%) than women (26%) claimed to find size zero unattractive.
Only five percent of those polled admit they would like to be an American size 0 and only one per cent is currently trying to achieve a size zero.
Almost half of those polled (49%) claim the volume of conflicting information in the media leaves them confused regarding nutrition and healthy eating.
This confusion is illustrated in their potentially health damaging weight loss methods. 33% resort to not eating bread in an effort to lose weight, while almost a quarter (23%) omit all dairy foods.

In response to these findings, key VES messages communicated to regional radio audiences included bread’s nutritional merits; bread’s role in healthy weight loss and long-term weight management.

Hard copies of the VES booklet are available on request plus it can be downloaded from www.fabflour.co.uk. The VES booklet will form part of the conference pack materials at the British Dietetic Association (June); Nursing in Practice (May and September); National Obesity Forum (October).

ADM Milling Limited announced on the 23rd July 2007 a flour increase of £68.13 per tonne for all flours to become effective from Monday 20th August 2007.

Tim Cook, ADM Milling, Sales and Marketing Director stated, “The dramatic and well publicised rise in UK and world wheat prices could no longer be absorbed by the business and therefore, regrettably, it had no option but to reflect this increase in the future price of flours.”

Folic Acid Fortification

The Food Standards Agency agreed on the 17th May 2007 that mandatory fortification of either bread or flour should be recommended to UK Health Ministers. This would be part of a package of measures to help prevent neural tube defects (NTD’s), which can result in miscarriage, neonatal death or lifelong disability. Demographics show that it is the poorest and most educationally underprivileged women who are most at risk of a spina bifida pregnancy.

Mandatory fortification has already been introduced in the US, Canada and Chile, where it cut NTD defect rates by up to half. This evidence has prompted the FSA Board to agree to the measure after rejecting it five years ago.

Folic acid is a source of folate, a vitamin found in broccoli, sprouts, peas, chickpeas, brown rice and fruit. It is important for the development of the spine in the first stages of pregnancy and women are advised to eat extra folic acid when trying to get pregnant. However, research suggests that only half of such women adhere to this advice. Also, up to half of pregnancies are unplanned, meaning women may miss the opportunity.

The FSA board could not agree on whether folic acid should be added to bread or to flour, which would mean it would also be included in biscuits and cakes. These issues of technicality and implementation are scheduled to be resolved at future meetings. For further information refer to http://www.fabflour.co.uk/home.asp
