May News 2009 - ADM Global Safety Week

ADM’s 2009 Global Safety Week, held between 11th to 15th May was a great success. During the week ADM built awareness that safety is a core value and requires constant vigilance. This was promoted through various activities including the encouragement of safe processes and safe behaviours to suppliers when delivering to ADM sites. Pictured below are suppliers showing their commitment to these safe practices and receiving an ADM ‘Zero is Possible’ safety mug.
May News 2009 - Snowdonia Charity Challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK 2009

This weekend saw intrepid members of ADM Milling, negotiate crossing the breadth of Snowdonia and summit the 13 highest peaks in Wales in aid of Cancer Research UK.
This was achieved over two days and covered an approximate distance of over 30 miles. As if this wasn’t challenging enough, the team had to tackle the severe weather conditions including snow (yes that’s snow in May!) and wind speeds over 70mph.
Despite the numerous challenges, a great time was had by all and to date over £6000 has been raised for Cancer Research UK.
A big thank you to everyone who has kindly sponsored the team and made a donation. If you’d like to make a donation, it's not too late please go to the Justgiving website at:

- The GDP for the UK economy fell by a revised 1.9% in three first three months of 2009 according to the revised figures issued by the Office of National Statistics.
- Retail sales volumes rose by 2.6% in the year to April according the Office for National Statistics.

Industry News - May 2009
- The Grocer has highlighted, using TNS data, the increase in value and volume sales of wrapped bread for the 52 weeks to February 2009. Increased sales of white bread in particular were noted, branded increased 2% in volume and own label increased 5.5% in volume.
- FSA Salt Targets-FSA announced their salt targets on 18th May. The revised 2012 target for bread is 0.4mg of sodium per 100g bread. Helpfully there was also a reallocation of ‘buns’ to ‘Morning goods’ which is a more realistic appreciation of the sodium contents of these products.
- The US Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission have each taken a major breakfast cereal producer to task over health claims made on their products. The FDA has said that claims such as ‘clinically proven to help lower cholesterol’ make the product a drug under federal law because it is a specific health claim. The FDA recognises that more general claims about reduction in heart-disease risk from eating whole-grain foods may be allowed.
May 2009: Did you know...
...cereal as a word is derived from the name of the Roman goddess Ceres, protector of crops.
And speaking of cereals a new Credit Crunch breakfast cereal is being launched soon!
